For those who haven't heard yet, Vinnie really rips it up on this album! Check it out:

I think I may have to get this disc. Vinnie sounds fresh like he always does, and the band sounds tight. Nice arrangement, Good stuff.

This makes me really miss the soloing style of the older Vince stuff. I don't really like the solo in this tune. On the other hand his groove feels nice, considering the meter it's in.
Vinnie doesn't solo like he used to and that kind of sucks.

Yeah I kinda know what you mean Steve - but on the plus there are A LOT of solo spots throughout this disc (have you heard it all?). Maybe he is trying to solo like Cobham a bit on this tribute?

I like most of what vinnie plays. I reckon what he played there was kinda perfect for that section - i wouldn't have liked him to overplay there. I think he played just what he needed to. It was a pretty difficult solo section though!

It's obvious that Vinnie is trying to do a lot of Cobham's parts. The solo is not at all Cobham-like. It's very Vinnie. Until the last 4 bars or so, where he goes back to doing BC.
I agree. The Tribute itself judging by this is quite competently done. but very weak and lifeless compared to Mahavishnu. These guys sound like they're a good cover fusion band. Where's the passion?
I love Vinnie, Cobham and Narada. But Narada often had a raw, intense fire I've rarely heard from anyone else. He was always playing to the edge of his remarkable abilities. Those 3 guys are all among my very favorites.

I went out and got the CD. I will say that it is kick *ss Vinnie. The personnel on the CD are top notch and the playing is at that level. However, given all of that, after listening to the CD over and over again (I can never get enough of Vinnie), I am left with the feeling that it just doesn't capture the overall sound of the original Mahavishnu. Now that may not be a fair comparison since this is a "tribute" and isn't necessarily supposed to sound exactly like the original. My two favorite Mahavishnu albums are Birds of Fire and Visions from the Emerald Beyond. My impression of those two albums as compared to this CD is that the originals captured a raw energy that is missing from the CD. As great as Vinnie is, I don't feel that same animal bombastic energy that Narada played with or Cobham for that matter. Also, I guess no one can really touch the great Mahavishnu himself. In the end I suppose my expectations were unrealistic.
Notwithstanding my comments above, I love the tribute, think there is some fantastic Vinnie and others on there and I listen to it constantly. I highly recommend it to any Mahavishnu or Vinnie fans.
